South Africa's favourite vehicle, and for good reason. This is the guide to bakkies — the pickup trucks that do work, family and adventure in one — covering the cab types, 4x4, towing and how to buy with total confidence.
No vehicle sits closer to the heart of South African motoring than the bakkie. The Hilux and Ranger trade the best-seller crown month after month, and for millions of buyers a double cab is simply the car — work truck during the week, family and adventure machine at the weekend.
That versatility is exactly why choosing one takes a little know-how. Get the cab, drivetrain and capability right for how you actually live, and a bakkie will do more for you than almost anything else on four wheels.
The first big decision is the body itself — how many you seat versus how much you carry. Here are the configurations you'll be choosing between.
Two seats and the longest, most usable load bed. The pure workhorse for fleets, farms and anyone who carries far more than they seat. Cheapest to buy and to run.
A stretched cab with a small space or occasional jump seats behind the fronts, and a longer bed than a double cab. A halfway house for the odd passenger plus serious load.
Four doors, five seats and a full rear bench. The default South African bakkie — family, lifestyle and light work in one vehicle, and by far the best-seller.
The enclosed wagon version built on the same tough ladder-frame chassis — think Fortuner or Everest. All the toughness, no open load bed. Covered in our Family and Off-Road guides.
Beyond the badge, five things decide whether a bakkie fits your life. Get these right and the rest is detail.
The configuration above, plus how long and usable the load bed is. This sets the balance between the people you seat and the load you carry — the very heart of what a bakkie is.
4x2 versus 4x4, low-range gearing and diff locks. Be honest about whether you need genuine off-road ability, occasional gravel-and-towing traction, or just the look — each points to a different (and differently priced) choice.
The work numbers: roughly a tonne of payload and up to 3,500 kg of braked towing on the strongest models. Match them to your caravan, boat or trailer — and check you can carry and tow at the same time.
Diesel torque still rules for towing and load, but the segment now offers seriously potent "power bakkies" with V6 and bi-turbo engines for those who want performance as well as capability.
Modern double cabs are close to SUV-comfortable, with strong safety kit and tech. The rugged rear suspension still rides firmer when the bed is empty, so a test drive unladen is well worth it.
From value workhorses to the best-sellers to full-blown power bakkies. Here's how it stacks up, with a standout at each level.
Figures are indicative — confirm current South African specs before buying. Power in kW; towing is braked capacity in kg; most models are also sold in 4x2. Off-road-focused flagships like the Raptor prioritise speed and suspension travel over maximum towing.
The picks above are ours. This is everything else — every bakkie we hold a record for, sourced from the manufacturer’s own South African specifications and pricing. Where a figure is not published we show “Not specified” rather than estimate it, and a price shown as a range covers every derivative in it. These are records, not recommendations.
A bakkie is a long-term, hard-working purchase. Walk in with these on your list.
A 4x2 or extra cab may be all you need and save real money — but weigh resale, where 4x4 double cabs lead. Buy for your life, not the brochure.
Check the braked towing and payload against your real loads. A "3.5 tonne" headline doesn't always come with full payload at the same time.
Part-time versus full-time, low range, diff locks and traction aids differ a lot. Match the system to the terrain you actually drive.
Diesel economy, service plans and tyres add up over the big distances bakkies cover. Confirm the plan and its length.
Bed length, liner, tow bar, canopy fitment and tie-downs. The practical details are what turn a bakkie into your bakkie.
Hilux and Ranger hold value exceptionally well. If it's a family vehicle, also check the crash rating, airbags and ISOFIX anchors.
Same tough roots, a different shape to the answer. Here's where the bakkie sits.
Open load bed, big towing and rugged 4x4 — work and lifestyle in one.
Enclosed, car-like space and seats for the whole household.
A closed wagon built to go further off the tar.
Refinement and craftsmanship above outright capability.
It's about the balance between seats and load. A single cab has two seats and the longest load bed — a pure workhorse. An extra (or king) cab adds a little space or occasional jump seats behind the fronts. A double cab has four doors, five seats and a full rear bench, which is why it's the default family-and-lifestyle bakkie.
Only if you'll use it. A 4x2 handles gravel roads, towing and daily duties perfectly well and costs less to buy and run. Choose 4x4 for genuine off-road terrain, heavy towing on loose surfaces, or for the stronger resale that 4x4 double cabs enjoy in South Africa — not just for the look.
Most modern double-cab 4x4s from the mainstream brands are rated to tow up to 3,500 kg braked. Just confirm two things for your exact model: that it's the braked figure, and that you can still carry your intended payload at the same time — the headline towing and full payload don't always apply together.
They've come a long way and often lead on equipment and price, frequently with long warranties. Weigh that value against dealer network, parts availability and resale. The established names still hold their value best, so factor the full ownership picture, not just the purchase price.
A bakkie gives you an open load bed, big towing and rugged 4x4 ability, and modern double cabs are genuinely comfortable — but the ride is firmer and the load area is exposed. A family SUV offers an enclosed, car-like cabin and more usable in-cabin space. Choose the bakkie if you tow, carry or go off-road; the SUV if comfort and enclosed space come first.
