Who we are

This website is operated by Sport Utility Vehicles (Pty) Ltd, an online automotive magazine and vehicle marketplace based in South Africa, covering SUV news, reviews, buyer’s guides and vehicle listings.

For the purposes of the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), Sport Utility Vehicles (Pty) Ltd is the responsible party for the personal information described in this policy.

What we collect, why, and on what basis

POPIA requires us to have a lawful reason for processing each kind of personal information. Ours are set out below.

Enquiry and quote forms. When you submit a form — a contact enquiry, a vehicle listing enquiry, or a request for a finance or insurance quote — we collect the information you provide. That may include your name, email address, phone number, the vehicle you’re asking about, and any figures you have entered into our cost calculators, such as a deposit amount or monthly distance.

We use this to respond to you and, where you have asked us to, to pass your request to the provider named on that form. Our lawful basis: your consent, given when you tick the consent box on the form. You may withdraw it at any time — see “Your rights” below.

Comments. If you leave a comment we collect the information in the comment form, plus your IP address and browser user-agent string, which help us detect spam. An anonymised string created from your email address (a hash) may be sent to the Gravatar service to check whether you use it; Gravatar’s privacy policy is at https://automattic.com/privacy/. Once a comment is approved, your comment and profile picture are visible publicly. Our lawful basis: your consent for the comment itself, and our legitimate interest in preventing spam and abuse.

Site usage and advertising. We use Jetpack (a WordPress.com service) for visitor statistics and to serve advertising. These services may set cookies and collect information including your IP address, browser type and how you move around the site. Our lawful basis: our legitimate interest in understanding how the site is used and in funding it through advertising. We also count aggregate page and button events on our own server; this involves no cookies and no personal information.

Security and site operation. We process technical information such as IP addresses to keep the site running and to protect it from abuse. Our lawful basis: our legitimate interest in the security of the site.

Cookies

If you leave a comment, you may choose to have your name, email address and website saved in a cookie so you don’t have to re-enter them. These last one year.

Visiting our login page sets a temporary cookie to check whether your browser accepts cookies. It contains no personal information and is discarded when you close your browser. Logging in sets further cookies that save your login and screen display choices; these last two days, or two weeks if you select “Remember me”. Editing or publishing an article saves an additional cookie containing no personal information, which expires after one day.

Jetpack and our advertising partners also set cookies, as described above.

Embedded content from other websites

Pages on this site may include embedded content such as YouTube videos, Instagram posts and slider content. Embedded content behaves exactly as though you had visited that other website directly. Those websites may collect information about you, set their own cookies, embed further tracking, and monitor how you interact with the embedded content. We do not control what they collect.

Media

If you upload images to the site, avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS), because visitors can download those images and extract the location data.

Who we share your information with

We do not sell your personal information to anyone.

We share it in these situations only:

Vehicle enquiries. If you enquire about a specific vehicle listing, we pass your enquiry to the dealer or seller of that listing, so they can respond to you.

Finance and insurance quotes. If you request a quote, we pass your details to the insurance or finance provider named on that form at the time you submit it. The provider is always named on the form before you consent — we will never pass your details to a provider we haven’t told you about. That provider then handles your information under its own privacy policy, and we encourage you to read it.

Service providers. Comments may be checked by an automated spam-detection service. Our hosting and analytics providers process information on our behalf in order to run the site.

Legal obligations. We may disclose information where the law requires it.

If you request a password reset, your IP address is included in the reset email.

How long we keep your information

Enquiry and quote form submissions: 12 months from the date you submit them, after which they are deleted. If your enquiry leads to an ongoing relationship, we may keep records for longer where the law requires it.

Comments: for as long as the article they appear on is published. You can ask us to delete your comment at any time.

Account information, if you register: for as long as your account exists. You can view, edit or delete it yourself at any time, except your username.

Your rights

Under POPIA you have the right to:

  • Ask what we hold about you, and receive a copy
  • Correct information that is wrong or incomplete
  • Ask us to delete information we hold, except where we are required to keep it for legal, administrative or security reasons
  • Object to processing based on our legitimate interest
  • Withdraw your consent at any time, where consent is what we relied on

To make any of these requests, email info@sportutilityvehicles.co.za or write to the postal address above. We will respond within a reasonable period.

Complaints

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your personal information, please contact us first — we would rather fix it directly.

You also have the right to complain to the Information Regulator (South Africa), which supervises compliance with POPIA.

Complaints are lodged through the Information Regulator’s eService Portal, accessible at inforegulator.org.za. You can also contact the Regulator at:

Email: enquiries@inforegulator.org.za

Telephone: 010 023 5200, or toll-free 0800 017 160

How we protect your information

We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect the personal information submitted through our site, including secure hosting and access controls that limit who can see submitted enquiry data.

Where your information is sent

Some of the services we use process information outside South Africa — including our analytics and advertising provider, the automated spam-detection service, and providers of embedded content.

Where personal information is transferred outside South Africa, we take reasonable steps to satisfy ourselves that the recipient is subject to laws, binding rules or agreements that provide an adequate level of protection, as required by section 72 of POPIA.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top shows when it was last changed. Where a change materially affects how we handle your information, we will say so on this page.
